Dialysis
Starting November 1, 2024 we can now accept stable patients needing dialysis in the CDU. This includes people who need to come to CDU for another established protocol but is expected to need dialysis during their stay. If this will result in patient staying more than 24 hours total, they should still be admitted.
Established Dialysis patient unable to access their usual dialysis center
Examples: Snowstorm, Patient Traveling and Could not get chair while in Denver, Flood at Dialysis Center etc
Working Vascular Access for Dialysis
Can wait 12-24 hours before going on machine
(Think K+ < 6.5, No pulmonary Edema, reasonable CO2)
Main ED Provider has discussed with Nephrology and they agree to dialyze the patient from CDU
Any other illness or issue also meets CDU Criteria and Protocol
Needs Emergent Dialysis
No suitable for discharge directly following dialysis
Example - No outpatient dialysis chair
Cannot return home, unable to complete ADLs
Non-Working Vascular Access
Abnormal vitals signs
Nephrology not on board
Cardiac monitoring
CDU RN to communicate with Dialysis Unit (x85560) regarding timing
Following Dialysis patient can be discharged home
Disposition
Dialysis completed and patient returned to CDU
Any other CDU related conditions treated and ready for discharge
Plan for patient to have next dialysis session as outpatient
Patient cannot be dialyzed within 24 hours of arrival
Issue with vascular access
Patient needing Care Management Services to arrange next HD session
Unstable vital signs
Unable to complete ADLs
